avatar profile business help please

Ok guys I am a little daft when it comes to computery things. I would likt add the avatar pic thing to my profile. A photo of my tortoise which is in a file in 'My Picturess' and also on my facebook. but what ever I do it comes up invalid. I don't think i am putting the URL in... I don't really understand what that is. i have tried all the addresses and numbers I can find associated with the pic.
Please help.
