For the first time I allowed my Hermanns who are 20 years old, the opportunity to bury down in the greenhouse to hibernate as opposed to using the fridge method.
After 4 months of hibernation as I was concerned that although heat was provided, there was no sign of them stirring. The male seems to only pick at his food and also showing no signs of interest in the females. After 5 weeks took him to a vet who examined him and confirmed he could see nothing wrong in his mouth and suggested that I increased the heat source. He is now indoors with a basking temp of 30-32 deg and a night time temp of 20 degrees. He is getting up when the basking bulb comes on but is not feeding and after basking just hides in the corner. He has passed urine and some droppings. He appears to be blind in one eye as there is no reaction when I place a finger near.
I have never experienced anything like this before. Does anyone have any ideas what could be the problem and what the chances of recovery are?

Having recently relocated from Mersea Island in Essex to a village near Buckingham, Buckinghamshire, I'm trying to find a vet who is able to implant mini chips in my batch of hermanns hatchlings from last year. They need to be chipped to enable me to apply for article 10 certificates. Can anyone recommend a suitable vet in the Bicester/Milton Keynes areas ?

Follicular Stasis- After several weeks of strange behaviour eg: reluctance to get up in the morning and wanting to dig down frequently, also not feeding as much, I took my oldest female Hermanns to the vet. He has x-rayed her which showed nothing abnormal and no eggs present, he also carried out a a can which has which has shown that she may have slightly enlarged egg follicles. I don't know much about this subject but have learnt that it the situation can be caused when egg follicles are not stimulated to develop into eggs. This female has laid eggs for the past 4 years and her last clutch of 3 were laid in June this year, all fertile incidentally. She lives with another female in the same enclosure which is next to a male who is put in the pen with the females every few weeks. If the vet is correct in his diagnosis, is there anything that can be done to rectify the problem? .

Further to my earlier message re the hatchling not feeding. I have examined the hatchling and have discovered that it does not appear to have any nostrils and there seems to be a scale growing where the nostrils would normally be. The mouth is functional even though there is a groove in the middle of the beak. I assume that the deformity may be the reason why this hatchling isn't feeding. I would be most interested to learn of anyone else who has experienced this type of deformity and what the outcome was.

Hatchling not feeding. I have 3 hatchlings that hatched on 6th August and all but one are doing fine. There is one that shows no interest in feeding and seems intent to stay buried in the substrate. I have tried all types of food to try and stimulate the appetite but to no avail. I make sure that the tortoise is kept hydrated. I have hatched and reared quite a few tortoises over the years but have never encountered a hatchling that is reluctant to feed. Has anyone experienced this before ? I would be grateful for any suggestions as to what else i can try in an effort to get this hatchling feeding.

Winding down and possibly gravid. It's been a strange year for my Hermanns tortoises. They were hiding a lot of the time and not getting up in the morning and had not laid any eggs so I had the droppings checked for worms and the results showed a high count of pinworm eggs. Following a course of panecur they have all picked up and my oldest female laid 3 eggs 3 days ago. They are now in week 2 of winding down for hibernation and I am not sure if the younger female who is 7 yrs old and not yet laid any eggs may be gravid. What's the opinion of hibernating tortoises which may be gravid? Are eggs simply carried through hibernation and laid in the spring?

Has anybody got any advice on how long a hermanns tort takes to hatch ? I have 3 eggs and one of them started to pip at 6 am this morning but as yet has not made any progress .
