My definatly non expert opinion is they are both male russian horsfield torts. Im sure some one will be along soon to confirm what they are.

Are you sure they are russians? I am personally useless unless I have the tort in my hand-photos are bad for my old eyes. He was told they were a spur and hermanns!

Without a doubt they are Horsfields and I would hazzard a guess at both female. Perhaps Sue will be along in a bit to confirm sex of them.

Hmm !! :o :? have just called him and told him and he called the owner who said the vet said the one with spurs lighter one, was a spur thigh-but this is the vet that recommended that at 10yrs old they both be kept in a viv and could never go outside! grrrrrrrrrrrr
I defer to your answers, of course as I have no experience of horsfields at all!! Thanks all of you

they are definatly horsfields i keep a small group myself :D i also have a very light colored male in my group and a very dark male (the males dont live together) with number 1 i was swining more to a female with a larger tail i have a female like this :D but wasnt 100% so it does look like two females :D but as Tamie says some 1 like Sue will confirm this  they are nice looking horsfields tho :D

I agree re the hidden problems, unsure of diet etc that they have had previously.

Just out of interest what are the little spur things on either side of the tail on the bottom one?

Yep horsfields for sure they come in all different shades. The yellow one is lovely. I would say both females.

They are so obviously horsfields (russian) tortoises, I would suggest your friend changes his/
her vet if they ever need treatment<g>. If he/she cant identify tort speices then he/she wont
be any good treating them.

Yup, Horsfields, top one male, bottom female from what I can see on those shots, but would need a proper look to be sure. :)

Thanks all again! No good with names have forgotten them as soon as I have seen them! I had a tortoise once called cleopatra and most times I called her juliet!(antony and cleopatra and romeo and juliet) but the male I called anthony everytime.
