Just been on The Tortoise Table site. They ask people to change the title of the thread in the ID section from "please ID this weed" to the name of the weed that was identified. That way people can see multiple photos in various situations. People will still ask, but the site will build an amazing database of plants for folk to browse. What am I saying!? They'll still just post rather than researching first anyway!!

Just a thought.

That is a really good idea. Ask the question then turn it into an answer, and build up a data base

I tried doing one of my own posts but the title didn't change! Only the title in the thread changed, not the title of the thread. Why is this?

Nope, doesn't work! I just tried it again. Only able to change the title of the post, not the thread.

Linda, I tried to change a title and like Wolflore couldn't do it :???: Sure you will be able to "fix" it cos it would be great for the thread Wolflore suggested

I'm sure only moderators can change it, is that not right?

I've just tried it on my 'Coming soon' thread and you can change the post title in 'Advanced' but not the thread title. Is that not because if the thread titles were being changed they would not come up in searches or on Google though?

Would seem so Alan :-(

Weirdly, after you added test 2, my add of (and again) has now appeared in the title! Maybe it just needs the nod from a Mod ;)

Unfortunately members currently can't edit titles, it's a mod permission. I'll look into seeing if it's possible for me to bodge a work around or something. :)

Ok - try now. It's a real bodge fix I'm afraid. There's a time limit on how long you can specify to edit titles so I've made it pretty much as long as I can, but there is still a limit.

I imagine old threads will still have the issue, however new threads will be OK for quite some time (few years or something daft). Let me know how you get on.

I think it's great that you are able to do that now, not least to sort speelign mistaicks in the titles but at the same time, how will it effect searches? I sometimes remember a thread title and then search for it but what will happen now, will it throw up the latest edit or the original title or all versions or what?

I'm not liking it tbh... it can be over used and misused.... and yes Alan when searching its not going to throw up the old title...

This function needs to be used correctly... to save confusion...

Yes I'm thinking people may not recognise a thread title from for example, a couple of days ago if it's been changed and may therefore not reply or be searching for a thread from yesterday and can't find it for the same reason. So, great idea but it will lead to problems for sure I think

Like anything new it'll probably go through a phase of being the 'in' thing to do and cause no end of bother. Then, the long standing members and mods will start to moan at the newbies to stop it and it'll settle down. Until then, batten down the hatches. ;) This is why we only have a few carefully chosen mods!

I do think it's a useful tool for people to have, but Kelly raises a valid point in that it can be misused and it can cause problems with searches etc. Whilst I've made it available can we please not abuse this new feature else I'll have no choice but to remove it. Ta :)
