Hi Viv i'd aim between 4-7c, no lower than 4c and no higher than 7c, hope this helps.

there isn't a set number you just have to play with the temp adjuster, thats why most have the fridge running for a few weeks before needing it, make sure you have the box and bedding in it that the tort will be in and where the fridge is sited can affect it or at least it does mine, mines in the conservatory the unheated side and the temp will drop below what I want it to be if we have a heavy frost and again rise if the outside temp goes up so you do have to keep a close eye on it, I have 3 thermometers 2 inside and a outside one with a probe inside anywhere between 4c and 6c should be ok, colder and the tort could be bamaged warmer and he might wake up, I have to move my tort into the garage if it gets cold enough and the fridge gets to cold.

My misunstanding, thought we were talking tort temps not fridge settings   as ann has said you need to fiddle with fridge therm to maintain a decent temp
thanks i have been playing away with it duing the day it stays on 6.9 but in the evening when the heating goes on it goes up to around 11,but if i turn it up high it gets to cold over night lol.l

Hi Vivp,
Have you got it stacked with bottles of tap water to help stablise the temps?
Ade
i have it filled with cans of beer at the moment and 2 box for the tortoises to go in.

your getting the same temp variation that I do although mine doesn't go quite that high, like I've already said mine is in the unheated part of the conservatory so it gets cold in there at night and can get warm through the day, my lowest fridge temp was around 3c which is to cold and it goes up to about 8c to hot so I can only use it part time which is ok as I don't work and don't mind the messing around, at the moment the garage is nice and cold between 4 & 5c so they are all in there but if we get a mild spell then I'll have to fridge the one akward baby if he wakes again, fingers crossed he won't, I have no answer to your problem so you might end up like me moving them around, have you looked at an outbuilding for a better temp or don't you have any where else, theres another posting on here about wrapping the box with a blanket etc if the shed gets to cold, there really isn't an easy way, maybe once your tort is asleep the temp variation won't wake him my other 3 don't stir at all its just the one annoying youngster whos the problem, ps could be worth trying another thermometer might be a faulty one.
i tried the shed but its insulated to well that it wasnt dropping below 10, and the garage is abit damp and the moment the fridge has settled at around 5.5c or 6c so will see what happens over night.

I used to use a fridge for hibination.I found the best place to keep the fridge was in a spare bedroom.
The bedroom temp remained above the set temp inside the fridge ensuring that the fridge thermostat would click on and off keeping the inside temp at between 5 and 6 degrees.
Care should be taken not to keep the fridge in a room(garage/shed) where the ambient temp could drop below the
set temp of the fridge. The inside of the fridge will drop to the ambient temp. The fridge casing will not stop the cold getting in.
Sorry if I am stating the obvious but it nearly caught me out.
Merry Christmas to all shelled warrior members.

Hello Viv,
Pleased you are happeir with your fridge temps.
I don't know how many tortoise's you have but you can play around with the shelve position in the fridge.
The higher up in the fridge the higher the temp and the lower part will be colder.
By moving about, up or down, you may be able to fine tune.Unless the fridge has a internal fan you will be surprised
at the difference in the temperature.
